CHRISTIANA LOT, Jos–
Nigerian youth have been called upon to leverage their digital expertise and information technology (ICT) skills to promote religious tolerance and cultivate peaceful coexistence among the nation’s diverse ethnic and religious communities.
The Programme Manager of Scripture Union West Africa (SUWA), Mr. John Fakunle, made the call during the International Youth Day celebration held by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Kaura Chapter, in collaboration with JIRSA, TEARFUND, and SUWA in the Kaura local government area of Kaduna State over the weekend.
Fakunle emphasized that the younger generation has the potential to spearhead the necessary efforts for fostering a harmonious society in Nigeria.
In his presentation titled “Freedom of Religion or Belief and Peaceful Coexistence in Kaura LGA,” Fakunde urged the youth to harness their digital skills to bridge religious divides and promote mutual respect within their communities.
He stated “In today’s interconnected world, young people have the power to bridge divides and champion the rights of all, regardless of their faith. Also, digital platforms, when used effectively, can help spread messages of encouragement and support, thereby contributing to peaceful coexistence and mitigating conflicts.
In addition to discussing digital tools, Fakunde also emphasized the importance of integrating youth into project implementation processes focused on freedom of religion or belief. “By involving young people in such initiatives, we empower them to become active agents of peace and change within their communities.
He highlighted that the JISRA, TEARFUND, and SUWA intervention project aims to promote religious tolerance and freedom of belief among community members, seeking to transform religious dynamics in Kaduna and Plateau States and reinforce efforts for peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.
Addressing concerns about youth apathy and exclusion from policy-making, Fakunde called on community leaders to engage young people more actively. “Religious and traditional leaders need to recognize the significant role of youth in shaping the future. Their large numbers and fresh perspectives are crucial for achieving success and fostering a sense of belonging”. He noted.
In a keynote address on “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health,” Dr. Jerry Bonet emphasized the critical role of youth in tackling food insecurity and environmental challenges. “Youth have the power to transform our food systems by harnessing digital tools and innovative practices that promote both human health and planetary sustainability,” He stated.
Dr. Bonet further stressed that the pressing issues of food insecurity and climate change require creative and sustainable solutions. He encouraged the youth to utilize their energy, creativity, and technological expertise to build resilient and inclusive food systems. “The energy, creativity, and technological prowess of our youth are essential in reimagining food systems that meet the needs of both people and the planet,”
Speaking earlier, Patience Stephen, Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Kaura LGA Chapter, praised the collaboration with JISRA, TEARFUND, and SUWA as a crucial step in empowering the youths. She highlighted that this partnership was designed to enhance youth engagement and address community needs effectively. Stephen underscored the event’s role in encouraging young people to advocate for their rights and contribute actively to their communities.
The event saw participation from diverse groups, including youths from Christian and Islamic organizations, civil society organizations, and traditional leaders.
