A devastating attack was carried out by yet-to-be-identified gunmen on a vigilance group office in Umunze, Orumba-South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, resulted in the death of a security operative and the destruction of five operational vehicles and part of the office.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, “The unfortunate incident happened in the early hours of Thursday where the suspected armed men attacked the vigilante’s office at Umunze and set five of their operation vehicles ablaze.”
Ikenga explained that during the gun duel, one of the security operatives sustained fatal injuries while trying to resist the attackers. “The security operatives in an attempt to ward off the gunmen during the gun duel recorded a fatal injury to one of the security operatives,” he said.
The attack also resulted in parts of the security office being burnt by the hoodlums. Ikenga stated, “Some parts of the security office also got burnt by the hoodlums.”
The Police-led Joint Security Force has taken over the scene to restore normalcy in the area. Ikenga called on local communities to collaborate with the police in their ongoing operations to ensure that those responsible for the attack are held accountable.
“We urge the local communities to cooperate with us to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the police spokesperson implied, emphasizing the need for collective effort to maintain peace and security in the state.
