Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun Corps, has verified the kidnapping of seven farmers in Itaogbolu, located in Akure North Local Government Area.
The State Commander of Amotekun Corps, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed the incident during a phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Akure.
He stated that the abductions occurred on Saturday and that Amotekun personnel have been combing the forests to locate the victims.
“I can confirm the kidnapping. Our operatives are actively searching the forests, and I personally visited the area yesterday (Sunday). We are optimistic about rescuing them soon,” Adeleye said.
Similarly, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, confirmed the incident to NAN and noted that police operations are underway to secure the victims’ release.
“There was indeed a kidnapping in Itaogbolu over the weekend. We are working diligently to apprehend those responsible and ensure the victims’ safe return. I cannot confirm the exact number of victims due to the ongoing operation,” Ayanlade explained.
A source, speaking anonymously to NAN, revealed that the kidnappers contacted the families of some victims, demanding a ransom of N100 million. The source added that the farmers were harvesting palm fruits on their farm when they were abducted on Saturday.
“We only heard from the kidnappers on Sunday evening when they reached out to a family member, demanding N100 million for the victims’ release. Negotiations with the abductors are ongoing,” the source said. (NAN)
