National Chairperson of Labour Party, Sen. Nenadi Usman
By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja –
Labour Party has refuted claims of organizing a One-Million-Man-March aimed at violently overthrowing President Bola Tinubu led administration.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, addressed a petition allegedly written by Abayomi Arabambi, who claims to be a party spokesperson.
The petition, directed to the National Security Adviser, accused Labour Party leaders, including Peter Obi, Joe Ajaero, Victor Umeh, Theophilius Ndubuaku, and Yunusa Tanko, of planning a protest to destabilize the government.
Arabambi, further, claimed the supposed march, set for July 30, was intended to reclaim the party’s former secretariat in Utako, Abuja, previously occupied by ex-chairman Julius Abure.
Asogwa categorically denied these allegations, stating, “The Labour Party leadership is unaware of any planned protest in Nigeria under the party’s banner. We have neither approved nor encouraged any group to march for the purpose of reclaiming a property the party has long vacated.”
He emphasized that, following the Supreme Court’s April 4 ruling affirming Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership, the party informed law enforcement agencies to enforce the judgment. Due to delays, the party relocated to a new, secure location and has since focused on its core objectives.
Asogwa called the accusation of a coup plot “farcical” and questioned how a protest to reclaim an abandoned office could be construed as an attempt to overthrow the government.
He labeled the claims a “reckless fabrication” meant to falsely implicate Labour Party leaders in a nonexistent scheme.
He also noted reports of the Department of State Services harassing party officials based on these allegations, warning that such actions threaten Nigeria’s democracy.
Asogwa urged security agencies to investigate the petition’s origins and expose those behind what he described as a “sinister agenda” to destabilize the nation through misinformation.
The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and democratic values, calling on Nigerians to recognize the accusations as a desperate and cowardly political maneuver.
