Anambra State Police Command has detained two individuals linked to the killing of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, shared the details in a statement released in Awka on Wednesday.
He revealed that, with the help of Umueri village residents in Ogbunike, authorities apprehended a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, on July 25, 2025.
The arrest relates to the brutal murder of a pregnant nurse whose mutilated remains were found in a soakaway pit in Ogbunike.
During questioning, Nwafor admitted to being the girlfriend of the main suspect, Chiemerie Elobisi, a fellow villager who remains at large.
She confessed to being summoned by Elobisi to clean up bloodstains after the nurse’s death and revealed that they sold the victim’s body parts to local native doctors.
Ikenga further disclosed that, based on Nwafor’s information, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department raided a shrine operated by a native doctor, Nwafor Ofornwatadile, in Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike, on July 29, 2025.
They recovered suspected human remains hidden in cellophane bags.
The police have launched a manhunt for Elobisi and others involved in receiving the body parts. Preliminary findings suggest the nurse was deceived into visiting Elobisi’s home under the pretense of receiving medical treatment.
Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu condemned the act as barbaric and a violation of human dignity.
He urged the public to provide information to aid the investigation, guaranteeing the anonymity of informants.
