Former Senator Dino Melaye
EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja –
Former Senator Dino Melaye has announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing its inability to address Nigeria’s deep-rooted political challenges.
The outspoken politician, who represented Kogi West in the Senate, made the declaration on Thursday through a post on his verified X account, sharing a signed resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
In a subsequent video posted on X, Melaye was seen receiving a membership card from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling his new political affiliation.
The move marks a significant shift for the former PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi State election.
In his resignation letter, dated July 4, 2025, Melaye expressed frustration with the PDP’s lack of effectiveness. “I can no longer align with a party that lacks the potency to rescue Nigeria from the political cankerworms devouring our nation,” he wrote. The letter underscored his decision to part ways with the PDP, stating that after deep reflection, he found it impossible to continue supporting the party’s agenda in good conscience.
Melaye’s departure stems from his belief that the PDP has failed to provide a robust platform to address Nigeria’s pressing issues.
“The party’s inability to deliver meaningful change has forced me to seek a new path,” he said in a statement accompanying the letter, emphasizing his commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
The resignation letter formally withdrew Melaye from all PDP activities with immediate effect. “This decision is final, as I can no longer participate in a structure that does not serve the nation’s urgent needs,” he stated, signaling a clean break from the party.
Despite his exit, Melaye expressed gratitude for his time with the PDP. “I remain thankful for the opportunity to have served under the PDP banner during my membership,” he noted, acknowledging the platform that once propelled him to prominence.
Melaye’s defection to the ADC has sparked discussions about the evolving political landscape in Kogi State and beyond, as observers watch to see how his move will influence Nigeria’s opposition dynamics ahead of future elections.
