FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi
By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja-
Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed the 2027 presidential ambitions of former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, labeling them as doomed from the start.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Wike asserted that Amaechi’s bid for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket is futile, predicting that Nigerians will reject him outright.
Wike, reflecting on their shared political history as former governors of Rivers State, took a swipe at Amaechi’s prospects.
“He’s chasing a lost cause.
“He claims he knows the president’s weaknesses, but he knew those same weaknesses in 2022 when Tinubu trounced him in the APC primary,” Wike remarked.
“Nigerians have already decided: ‘Amaechi’s bid is dead on arrival; he won’t even secure the ADC ticket.’”
Amaechi, who placed second in the 2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary won by President Bola Tinubu, defected to the ADC in 2025 to pursue his 2027 presidential aspirations.
However, Wike, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart and the sole opposition figure in Tinubu’s cabinet, questioned Amaechi’s credibility.
“When he was governor, he showed no respect for the judiciary or the rule of law. How can he now claim to champion good governance and fight corruption?” Wike challenged.
The two men, once allies during their tenures as Rivers State governors—Amaechi from 2007 to 2015, followed by Wike until 2023—now share a deeply strained relationship.
Wike’s comments also come amid accusations of his own anti-party activities within the PDP, fueling tensions in Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 elections loom.
