Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as potential candidates for its 2027 presidential ticket.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed revealed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s _Politics Today_ on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
Describing Jonathan as “the most celebrated politician today,” Mohammed noted that the former president had overcome political challenges before the 2015 election and was later cleared by the courts.
He also highlighted Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, as a strong contender should he choose to rejoin the PDP.
“We are certainly looking at President Jonathan as a potential candidate if he expresses interest in running with us,” Mohammed said.
“And for someone like Peter Obi, if he decides to return to a platform free of obstacles, he will absolutely have an opportunity.”
When asked if PDP governors were actively engaging Obi, Mohammed responded, “Haven’t you seen him with me? He’s my brother, my friend, and one of the most celebrated politicians too. We’re not idle; we just don’t make noise about it.”
Mohammed also mentioned other southern PDP figures, such as Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, as potential contenders for the ticket.
He emphasized the party’s focus on attracting prominent politicians to strengthen its position ahead of 2027.
“There are many capable leaders. I’ve even had discussions with [former Rivers State Governor] Rotimi Amaechi,” he revealed, adding, “If he wants to return, he’s free to do so.”
The PDP’s National Executive Council (NEC) recently zoned its 2027 presidential candidacy to the southern region while retaining the national chairmanship for a northerner, with Umar Damagum confirmed as National Chairman during its meeting in Abuja on Monday.
