In a deadly assault, suspected kidnappers gunned down eight Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel and abducted a Chinese expatriate at the BUA Cement Company in Okpella, Edo State, on Friday night.
The attack occurred around 10:00 p.m. as the NSCDC team escorted five Chinese expatriates back to their base after a routine patrol.
A source familiar with the incident told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the armed assailants, wielding advanced weaponry, ambushed the convoy at the company’s entrance.
“The gunmen opened fire, killing eight NSCDC operatives and one civilian,” the source revealed.
Despite the heavy loss, the NSCDC’s quick response ensured the safe rescue of four expatriates.
However, one Chinese national was taken hostage.
The source added, “Four other NSCDC officers were injured and are now receiving medical care at a confidential facility.”
Edo State NSCDC Commandant, Gbenga Agun, has visited both the attack site and the hospitalized officers.
The NSCDC’s Edo Public Relations Officer, Efosa Ogbebor, refrained from commenting, noting that an official statement would come from the Corps’ national headquarters. ( NAN)
