The 18 local government area chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State have unanimously endorsed Mr. Venatius Ikem for re-election as the state party chairman ahead of the September 27 congress.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the chairmen announced their support during a press conference following a meeting in Calabar on Wednesday.
The chapter’s chairman, Mr. Odidi Achom, emphasized Ikem’s competence and leadership, stating, “His re-election will ensure stability and unity in the PDP as we prepare for the 2027 general elections.”
Achom praised Ikem’s effective stewardship of the party, even as an opposition, over the past four years.
“We’ve consulted widely and believe Ikem’s continued leadership is essential for the party’s progress,” he added.
Achom acknowledged competing interests in the chairmanship race but affirmed the chairmen’s commitment to Ikem.
“We recognize other blocs’ ambitions, but our support for Ikem is rooted in his proven track record and transparency,” he said.
The secretary of the chairmen, Mr. Obia Ikika, echoed Achom’s sentiments, highlighting the strong working relationship with Ikem.
“We’ve enjoyed a productive partnership with him and want to maintain that momentum,” Ikika stated.
He clarified that while they respect the ongoing contest, their alignment with the state caucus leadership’s decision to retain Ikem’s State Working Committee (SWC) aims to prevent internal conflict.
“Our goal is to avoid rancor and keep the party united,” he added.
NAN reports that the state PDP caucus had previously endorsed the continuation of Ikem’s SWC for another term.
However, some leaders from the southern and central senatorial districts have expressed opposition to this decision at separate meetings.
The upcoming congress on September 27 will determine the party’s new state leadership.
