Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has publicly rejected a post-match statement that singled out Super Eagles players Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong for criticism following the team’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The statement, attributed to NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, described Dessers as sluggish and blamed Ekong for an own goal that gave Bafana Bafana the lead.
On Wednesday, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi clarified that the statement did not reflect the Federation’s official stance.
“I came across the release like everyone else, and the NFF is deeply displeased with it,” Sanusi stated. “That statement was not authorized by the Federation. We hold all our players in high regard, and it’s unfair to pin a team’s result on individuals.”
Sanusi emphasized the collective nature of the team’s performance.
“A win is a team effort, and so is a loss. No player should be singled out for blame,” he said.

He defended Ekong, noting the defender’s accolades as the Most Valuable Player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
“The own goal was unfortunate. Ekong intended to clear the ball, and such incidents are part of football,” Sanusi added.
Expressing confidence in the team’s cohesion, Sanusi highlighted ongoing preparations for upcoming qualifiers and the AFCON in Morocco.
“Our team is united, and our relationship with the players and coaching staff remains strong. The government and NFF are proud of their efforts,” he said.
While the NFF initially commended Calvin Bassey for his equalizing goal and noted missed opportunities in the second half, Sanusi stressed that the unauthorized statement would face consequences.
“The NFF will address this matter internally with appropriate disciplinary action,” he assured.
Nigeria currently ranks third in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifiers with 11 points from eight matches, trailing South Africa’s 17 points. The Super Eagles face crucial matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic, needing victories and favorable results elsewhere to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
