In a decisive move to tackle rising food costs, President Bola Tinubu has instructed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to implement measures aimed at significantly reducing the prices of food items across Nigeria.
The directive was announced by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Sabi Abdullahi, during a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists covering the Senate in Abuja on Wednesday.
Sen. Abdullahi revealed that the president’s order focuses on ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of agricultural products through various routes nationwide, a critical step toward lowering food prices.
“The president has given a clear directive to an FEC committee to ensure the safe passage of agricultural commodities across our routes,” Abdullahi stated.
“We are working diligently to address the high transportation costs that drive up the prices of food items at their delivery points.”
The minister emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s vision for food sovereignty, which encompasses food security, sufficiency, affordability, and nutritional quality on a sustainable basis.
“Our goal is to make food available, accessible, and affordable while maintaining its nutritional value,” he added.
Abdullahi also highlighted upcoming programs, including the Farmer Soil Health Scheme, which is set for launch pending a confirmed date, and reforms in the cooperative sector.
“President Tinubu is deeply committed to revitalizing the cooperative sector as a tool for resource mobilization and economic empowerment,” he said.
“The cooperative model is democratic and productive, and we encourage groups, including the press corps, to consider forming cooperatives to benefit from these reforms.”
The workshop, themed “ _Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges, and Responsibilities,”_ was organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and featured resource persons such as Sen. Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Sen. Ita Enang, and Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
