Scene of tanker explosion
A diesel tanker went up in flames after toppling over along the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The incident, which occurred around 6:16 p.m. on Thursday, prompted an immediate emergency response and traffic diversion to prevent further danger.
FRSC Sector Commander in Enugu State, Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, revealed the details in a statement issued to journalists in Enugu.
“At about 18:16 p.m., Sept. 25, 2025, the FRSC Enugu State Sector Command received a crash alert along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by Ugwu-Onyeama,” he stated.
He confirmed that rescue teams from both the Enugu State Sector Command and the FRSC 9th Mile Unit were dispatched to the site.
Although the tanker was fully engulfed in flames, no casualties have been reported.
“There is no life lost in the incident for now,” Agbakoba said, adding that it was a lone crash involving only the diesel-laden vehicle.
To ensure safety and maintain traffic flow, the FRSC has advised commuters to use an alternative route.
“We have advised motorists and pedestrians to follow the Ngwo Community Road, popularly known as ‘Ngwo Snake Road’, while going into and outside Enugu metropolis for now,” Agbakoba advised.
Meanwhile, both Federal and State Fire Services have been deployed to the scene and are working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.
“More details of the report will be forwarded soon,” the Sector Commander added.
