The body of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase, was received in Benin City on Saturday, drawing an emotional gathering of dignitaries, security officials, and grieving family members.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Nigerian Air Force aircraft NAF 031, carrying the late police chief, landed at Benin Airport at exactly 1:25 p.m.
On hand to receive the remains were top-ranking police officers, including the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Sulaiman Dogo, and the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika.
A delegation from the Edo State Government, led by Chief of Staff Alhaji Gani Audu, was also present. He was joined by the widow and close relatives of the deceased.
In a solemn tribute, the Edo State Police Command staged a brief ceremonial parade at the airport to honour the late IGP before the casket was transported to Ebony Mortuary in Benin.
Describing Arase as “one of the finest police officers Nigeria ever produced,” Audu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating:
> “Losing him at this time is very painful to the Nigeria Police Force in particular and the country in general.”
He praised Arase for his integrity and leadership qualities:
> “He listened to everyone, to every complaint, and tried to solve problems before him.
He was a gentleman, a lawyer, a professional, and above all, a man passionate about helping others.”
Representing Governor Monday Okpebholo, Audu extended the state government’s heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and disclosed that steps were being considered to honour Arase’s legacy.
> “We will do our best to work with the family to see how he can be immortalised. Edo people loved him and will remember him for his dedication and selfless service,” he said.
Dr. Solomon Arase served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector General of Police from 2015 to 2016 and most recently chaired the Police Service Commission. Known for his emphasis on intelligence-driven policing and reform, Arase was a highly respected figure in law enforcement.
Born on June 21, 1956, in Edo State, Arase passed away on August 31 in Abuja at the age of 69, following an undisclosed illness. His final resting place will be at his Benin City residence on October 3.
