Benin Kingdom will officially begin the consumption of the new yam (Emorho) following a traditional ceremony scheduled to take place at the palace on Monday, September 30.
This was announced in a statement released by Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, on behalf of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II.
The statement explained that the ceremony, which will be held indoors within the Palace, signifies the traditional opening of the new yam season in the kingdom.
“Following the ceremony, all sons and daughters of the Benin Kingdom, as well as indigenes and non-indigenes living in Edo who participated in the two-week fasting and prayer exercise can eat the new yam,” the Palace said.
The commencement of yam consumption follows the end of a two-week period of spiritual observance, declared by the Oba for the peace and progress of the land, and to mark the arrival of the harvest season. The fasting and prayer period ran from September 15 to September 28.
Oba Ewuare II extended his gratitude to all who took part in the prayers and fasting, offering his blessings and praying for peace and joy in every household.
