As Nigeria commemorates its Independence Day, former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr. Dumebi Kachikwu, has called on the nation’s leaders to finally act on the promises that have long been made — but not kept.
In a strongly worded message released on Wednesday in Abuja, Kachikwu urged both the leadership and citizens to use the moment of national reflection to confront Nigeria’s enduring realities.
“This is not just a day for celebration. It’s a day to look inward — to examine our journey as a nation, acknowledge our mistakes, and decide on a better way forward,” he said.
While honouring the sacrifices of the nation’s founding heroes, Kachikwu pointed out that their dreams — and those of generations since — have yet to be fully realised.
“For decades, fathers have passed down the hope of a better Nigeria to their sons.
“But generation after generation, Nigerians are still asking: When will that better Nigeria come?” he asked.
Quoting from Proverbs 13:12, Kachikwu reflected on the emotional toll of unfulfilled promises:
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”
He added, “The Nigerian people have been patient, resilient, and peaceful — even in the face of economic hardship and political disappointment. But the question remains: When will their desires become reality?”
According to him, true independence cannot be measured merely by the number of years since colonial rule, but by the quality of life, justice, and equality experienced by the people.
“When will this nation rise to serve every Nigerian — regardless of tribe, tongue, or religion?” Kachikwu queried.
He concluded by wishing all Nigerians a meaningful Independence Day and encouraged them to keep demanding accountability and visionary leadership.
