Former President Goodluck Jonathan
As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary, former President Goodluck Jonathan delivered a message of resilience and optimism, calling on Nigerians not to allow present challenges to eclipse their belief in the country’s future.
In a statement released in Abuja by his media adviser, Mr. Okechukwu Eze, Jonathan acknowledged the country’s struggles but emphasized that hope must never be abandoned.
“Indeed, we are confronted by difficulties that could dampen our spirit — insecurity, economic inequality, and institutional setbacks. But even in the face of these, we must choose hope over despair,” Jonathan said in his Independence Day message.
He described the anniversary as a time for national reflection — a moment to assess the road traveled and look ahead to the nation’s untapped potential.
“This occasion should remind us of the journey we’ve taken as a people — our trials, our triumphs, and the boundless possibilities that still lie before us,” he stated.
Highlighting the country’s strengths, Jonathan praised the natural and human wealth Nigeria possesses.
“Ours is a land rich not only in resources but in the creativity, intelligence, and determination of its people. From the arts to science, Nigerians continue to shine globally.”
He called on citizens to rise above divisions and embrace a spirit of patriotism, unity, and shared purpose.
“Let our love for country guide our actions. With steadfastness and unity, the promise of a greater Nigeria is not a distant dream, but an achievable goal,” he urged.
Closing his message with a note of encouragement, Jonathan expressed confidence in the nation’s future:
“May Nigeria continue to rise in strength, guided by the hopes and aspirations of her people.”
