Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) turned Kaduna into a gathering of Northern giants on Friday as it marked its 25th anniversary with a roll-call of influential leaders—living and departed—honoured for their service to the region and the nation.
Presided over by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the commemorative event drew statesmen, captains of industry and political heavyweights to the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Conference Hall at the Murtala Mohammed Square. It was a celebration steeped in history and reflection, befitting the Forum’s Silver Jubilee.
One of the night’s most prominent honourees was Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the Sarkin Yamman Sokoto and former governor of Sokoto State, who received the ACF Distinguished Service Award. Wamakko’s recognition stood out among a distinguished list that included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; retired Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma; and business mogul Aliko Dangote.
According to the ACF, Wamakko’s honour was in appreciation of his “invaluable contributions to the growth of the forum” and his years of selfless political and humanitarian service.
An evidently moved Wamakko described the award as deeply meaningful.
“I am deeply honoured to be recognised by the ACF with this historic award,” he said. “It is a testament to the collective efforts and dedication of many towards the betterment of our society.”
He further applauded the ACF’s work in championing Northern interests and uplifting communities, noting that the award was a recognition of “those who serve humanity selflessly.”
Several federal lawmakers from Sokoto—among them Rep. Ahmad Abdullahi-Kalambaina and Rep. Sani Alhaji Yakubu-Gudu—praised Wamakko’s recognition as well-deserved and timely. They urged leaders across the country to emulate the kind of service that earns genuine respect and honour.
Alhaji Abdulrahman Adamu also joined in celebrating Wamakko, urging more leaders to raise their standards in service delivery and public commitment.
The prestige of the night was further elevated by the presence of former Vice-President Namadi Sambo; the Sardaunan Zazzau; and Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, who represented Governor Uba Sani. Their attendance underscored ACF’s influence and its long-standing role in promoting unity, dialogue and development across the Northern region.
For the Forum, the anniversary was more than a ceremony—it was a tribute to 25 years of advocacy, nation-building and the relentless pursuit of good governance. And for awardees like Wamakko, it was a reminder that steadfast service, especially to humanity, does not go unnoticed.
As the applause faded and dignitaries dispersed, the message was clear: the North continues to celebrate its past, honour its present and set higher expectations for the future.
