Plateau State is notorious for violent attacks by bandits and armed militia
Fresh tension has gripped parts of Plateau State after gunmen attacked Nding Susut community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, killing five members of the same family and injuring three others.
The attack reportedly happened on Tuesday night when the assailants stormed the community and opened fire on residents who were relaxing outside their homes.
Residents said panic spread across the area as the gunmen shot indiscriminately, while one victim who initially escaped was later chased down and killed.
A community leader, Weng Christopher, lamented the repeated attacks in the area, saying residents now live in fear due to the worsening insecurity.
The Publicity Secretary of Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and expressed concern that the community is located close to a military checkpoint.
According to him, the attackers also attempted to invade the nearby Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area but were resisted by local vigilantes and security operatives.
Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Police Command said four women and a nine-year-old boy lost their lives, while three injured female victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The Commissioner of Police in Plateau, Bassey Ewah, said additional tactical teams had been deployed to the area as authorities intensify efforts to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
