Edo State Police Command has opened a full-scale manhunt for one Timothy Gilbert, the man accused of brutally attacking his girlfriend, 40-year-old Angela Ogah, with acid in Benin City.
Spokesperson for the command, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), explaining that Gilbert bolted from Ihovbe Quarters in the Ikpoba Hill area moments after the attack.
According to Yamu, the couple had been locked in a tense dispute over “issues of suspicion of infidelity,” an argument that allegedly spiralled into the violent assault.
Calling for restraint in relationships, the police spokesperson urged the public—especially couples—to reject abusive dynamics, warning that “love is not by force.”
Sources told NAN that Ogah is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at a private hospital, while Gilbert is believed to have fled the neighbourhood in a bid to escape arrest.
Her legal representative, John Izegaegbe, has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, demanding swift action to ensure justice for the victim.
Police have asked residents with any information about Gilbert’s whereabouts to come forward as the investigation intensifies.
