In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s aerial combat capabilities, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is accelerating the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters. The announcement came as Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led a Programme Management Review meeting with senior U.S. Government officials and representatives of Bell Textron in San Diego, California.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the discussions focused on fast-tracking the helicopter procurement to enhance the NAF’s operational readiness and ensure a professional, mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower in support of national security objectives.
Air Marshal Aneke expressed gratitude to the United States Government and Bell Textron for their “continued cooperation, professionalism, and transparency” in the execution of the programme.
He emphasized that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters is more than just an upgrade in platforms, calling it “a reflection of the enduring defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.”
Reaffirming the NAF’s commitment to the programme, Air Marshal Aneke assured the U.S. partners that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure the helicopters are delivered as swiftly as possible. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support of the Nigerian Air Force in its platform acquisition initiatives.
The Air Chief further reassured Nigerians of the NAF’s steadfast dedication to tackling terrorism and criminal activities with “professionalism, restraint, and accountability,” while maintaining public trust and confidence in the Service’s operations.
