Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has unveiled a revised timetable for the 2026 Local Government Elections, which will hold across the state’s 17 councils on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The update was announced on Friday during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Jos, where journalists and stakeholders were briefed on preparations ahead of the polls.
Speaking at the briefing, PLASIEC Chairman, Mr. Plangji Daniel Cishak, explained that the revision is part of the commission’s constitutional and statutory duties, aimed at guiding political parties and voters through the election process.
“As part of its mandate and in compliance with Sections 15, 19, 21 and 33 of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024, Section 197(1)(B) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) wishes to notify the leadership of all political parties and the general public that elections shall be conducted in the Seventeen (17) Local Government Councils of Plateau State on Wednesday, 9th September, 2026, between 8.00am and 3.00pm,” he said.
Under the new timetable, party primaries will take place from March 7 to 12, while political parties can collect nomination forms from March 13 to 17. Completed nomination forms must be submitted on March 18 and 19, with candidates’ details published on March 21.
Screening and verification of chairmanship candidates and their running mates will be carried out from March 23 to 24, while councillorship candidates will be screened between March 25 and 28. The list of qualified candidates will be published on March 30, and any appeals will be received on March 31 and determined on April 1. Campaign activities are scheduled to begin on April 11 and will end on September 7, just two days before the election.
Cishak emphasized that the election date falls within the legally prescribed period for local government polls in the state and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to a transparent and credible process.
He also assured that PLASIEC has put mechanisms in place to address disputes and will continue engaging stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
