Senator representing Borno Central, Kaka Shehu Lawan, has formally entered the 2027 governorship race in Borno State after obtaining his Nomination and Expression of Interest forms under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), collected the forms on Wednesday in Abuja, accompanied by a large delegation of party stakeholders, supporters, and members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
His entry into the race positions him among key contenders seeking to succeed Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.
Speaking to journalists shortly after picking up the forms, the senator expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Governor Zulum for what he described as their dedication to the unity of the APC and national development.
Explaining his ambition, Lawan said:
> “I am a Lawyer, and I have what it takes to use my expertise and knowledge gained over the years in the law and law making business to transform our dear state through inclusive governance and sustainable development.”
On the mode of candidate selection within the party, he acknowledged both constitutional options while aligning himself with the consensus approach.
> “The Electoral Act provides two options for candidates to emerge, either by primaries or consensus, so which ever way our stakeholders and teaming supporters adopt, I am very much prepared for it,” he said.
While affirming his support for consensus, Lawan maintained that due process must prevail if that option fails.
He said a primary election should be conducted in such a situation, stressing that whoever emerges must be accepted by all.
Among those who accompanied him were the member representing Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) at the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkadir Rahis; Senior Special Assistant (Political) in the Office of the Vice President, Hon. Mahammad Goni Malud; elder statesman, Hon. Lawan Maina Mahmud; and former MMC chairmen, Hon. Chiroma Usman and Hon. Bakari Ali Kotoko, alongside other supporters.
