Traffic movement along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was severely disrupted in the early hours of Friday following the overturning of a fully-loaded truck on the Otedola Bridge.
The accident, which occurred inward Lagos, led to a massive gridlock after the truck spilled its contents across the roadway, leaving motorists stranded for hours.
As of the time of filing this report, the traffic congestion had extended from the Otedola Bridge back to the Berger axis, forcing commuters heading into Lagos to explore alternative routes. Some motorists were compelled to drive against traffic on the outbound Lagos lane in a desperate attempt to escape the gridlock.
The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident in a Facebook post, revealing that a secondary crash occurred shortly after the initial accident.
The post read, “Two serious accidents have occurred at Otedola Bridge, inward Lagos.
“In the first incident, a fully loaded truck overturned, spilling its consignments onto the road and covering about 90 per cent of the carriageway. The second accident occurred directly behind the first crash, compounding traffic disruption in the area.
“Emergency responders have been alerted. Motorists are advised to drive with caution around the area.”
Emergency officials were said to be on alert as efforts continued to manage traffic and clear the affected section of the bridge.
