House of Representatives has approved the constitutional amendment bill seeking the creation of state police across Nigeria.
The proposal received overwhelming support from lawmakers during voting on the floor of the House, with 289 members backing the bill, while only four voted against it.
Voting was conducted through a show of hands after the House’s electronic voting system reportedly developed technical issues.
The approval represents a major step in efforts to reform Nigeria’s security structure and give states greater responsibility in policing and maintaining law and order.
Supporters of the bill believe state police will help tackle growing security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes affecting many parts of the country.
The move is expected to further advance ongoing discussions on decentralising policing and improving security responses at the state level.
