Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas
Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas has disbursed ₦300 million to resolve the lingering mosque ownership crisis in Donga, the headquarters of Donga Local Government Area in southern Taraba State.
The intervention, announced on Tuesday, is aimed at preventing further unrest among three Muslim groups in the area and restoring lasting peace.
The funds were released to support the construction of separate mosques for the affected factions, following disputes over the control of the Donga Central Mosque, which had earlier triggered tension and security concerns within the community.
The disagreement involved members of Izala Jos, Izala Kaduna, Darika, and the Muslim Council in Donga, raising fears of possible breakdown of law and order.
At the height of the crisis, Governor Kefas had visited Donga and met with religious leaders and stakeholders, where he assured them of his administration’s commitment to resolving the dispute and promoting unity.
As part of the peace-building process, the governor pledged to support the construction of separate worship centres for the affected groups to prevent further conflict and foster harmonious coexistence.
The ₦300 million disbursement represents the fulfillment of that pledge.
Representing the governor, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Godfrey Dame, presented cheques totaling ₦300 million to representatives of the sects.
Each group received ₦100 million to enable them to begin construction of their respective mosques.
During the presentation, Dame reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and inclusive development across Taraba State.
He noted that the governor’s prompt response to the crisis reflects responsible leadership and sensitivity to the concerns of citizens.
Community leaders and stakeholders in Donga expressed gratitude to Governor Kefas for honoring his promise, describing the intervention as timely and commendable.
They said the gesture would significantly reduce tension, strengthen unity, and prevent future misunderstandings among Muslim faithful in the area.
According to them, the construction of separate mosques will promote mutual respect and peaceful worship, while reinforcing stability in the community.
They also pledged to continue working with the state government to sustain peace and harmony in Donga and its surrounding areas.
