
Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) has formally admitted 6,505 new students into its various faculties and colleges for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The matriculation ceremony, held on Wednesday at the university campus in Sokoto, welcomed the fresh students into 17 faculties and colleges, marking the beginning of their academic journey at the institution.
Speaking during the event, the Vice Chancellor, Bashiru Garba, provided a brief history of the university, noting that UDUS is among the four second-generation universities established by the Federal Government in 1975.
According to him, the university has experienced remarkable growth since its early years.
He said the institution’s first convocation ceremony held on November 22, 1980, witnessed the graduation of only 72 students, but the number of graduates has grown significantly over the decades.
“Currently (2026), the university has a total of 17 Faculties, a College of Health Sciences (CHS), a College of Post graduate Studies, School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, School of Public Health, fifteen (15) Research Centers/Institute, Central Research Laboratory and quite a number of other academic and non-teaching units.”
Professor Garba described the institution as a source of pride to its founders and Nigerians, given the progress it has made over the years.
Providing a breakdown of admissions for the 2025/2026 academic session, the Vice Chancellor revealed that 306 students were admitted into the Faculty of Agriculture, while 187 secured admission into the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies.
He further explained that several other faculties also received large numbers of students.
“Faculty of Arts admitted 65 students, Faculty of Chemical and Life Sciences 1,146, Faculty of Education and Extension Services, 583 while that of Engineering and Environmental Design admitted 396.
“Others include, 398 students admitted in the Faculty of Management Sciences, 80 for Faculty of Law, 509 for Political Science Faculty and 150 Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 777 Faculty of Physical and Computing Sciences, even as the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine admitted 120 students. College of Health Sciences which comprises of 5 Faculties and 2 Schools admitted 822 and 1008 were admitted for Postgraduate Studies”. Prof. Bashiru disclosed.
One of the newly admitted students, Mariam Abdullahi, expressed joy over gaining admission into the institution.
She said she remains grateful to God and her parents for their support throughout her academic journey.
According to her, she is determined to justify the confidence reposed in her by graduating with outstanding results.
She told our correspondent that she would work hard to achieve her goal of finishing her studies with a first-class degree.
