Former Army Chief Tukur Buratai says Nigerian authorities know those financing terrorism, sparking renewed calls for action against Boko Haram sponsors
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.), has revealed that the Nigerian government is aware of individuals and groups backing terrorist activities in the country.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the retired military officer made a bold claim regarding the long-running insurgency.
“Government Knows The Names Of Those Financing And Sponsoring Terrorist groups,” he stated.
Although Buratai did not publicly disclose specific names, his remarks suggest that security agencies possess detailed intelligence on those allegedly funding Boko Haram operations. He served as army chief between 2015 and 2021, a period marked by intensified military campaigns against insurgents in the North-East.
His comments come at a time of renewed concern over insecurity in the region, following recent suicide attacks in Maiduguri and lingering questions about how terrorist groups continue to access funding, logistics, and possible protection networks.
The statement has since stirred public reaction, with many Nigerians urging authorities to move beyond intelligence gathering and take decisive action. Calls for the identification, arrest, and prosecution of alleged sponsors have grown louder, as citizens demand accountability in the fight against terrorism.
Buratai’s disclosure has once again brought the issue of terror financing into sharp focus, raising critical questions about enforcement and the political will to confront those behind the insurgency.
