Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned newly completed accommodation blocks for soldiers at the 6 Division, Port Harcourt, saying the project underscores the Nigerian Army’s resolve to improve the welfare of its personnel through its Soldier First initiative.
The new housing blocks were unveiled on Friday as part of ongoing efforts to provide soldiers and their families with better living conditions while boosting morale across the force.
Speaking during the commissioning, Shaibu described decent, secure and comfortable accommodation as a key component of troop welfare, noting that soldiers perform better when they have a conducive environment to live with their families.
According to him, improved housing not only raises morale but also enhances operational readiness and administrative efficiency, enabling personnel to carry out their constitutional responsibilities more effectively.
The Army Chief said a motivated and well-cared-for soldier is better equipped to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and respond swiftly to emerging security challenges across the country.
He added that sustained investment in the welfare of personnel remains critical to building a more professional, resilient and combat-ready Nigerian Army capable of meeting the nation’s security demands.
Shaibu also expressed appreciation to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the Nigerian Army through the provision of resources that have strengthened personnel welfare and improved operational effectiveness.
The commissioning of the accommodation blocks is the latest in a series of welfare-focused projects being executed under the present Army leadership as it seeks to improve the living conditions of troops serving in different parts of the country.
