Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has launched Taxporta, a new digital tax management platform aimed at simplifying tax administration, improving service delivery and increasing voluntary tax compliance across the FCT.
The platform was unveiled on Monday July 7 during a stakeholders’ engagement with Ministries, Departments and Agencies held at the National Assembly Library Trust Fund Complex in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Michael Ango, said the platform was part of the agency’s digital transformation agenda and an upgrade of its existing tax administration infrastructure.
According to him, the stakeholders’ engagement was organised to sensitise MDAs on the implementation of Nigeria’s 2025 tax reforms, encourage voluntary compliance, gather feedback and prevent multiple taxation.
Ango said Taxporta enables taxpayers to carry out virtually all tax-related transactions online without visiting FCT-IRS offices. He explained that the self-service platform allows users to register, file tax returns, calculate tax liabilities, make payments, generate receipts and obtain Tax Clearance Certificates electronically.
He added that the portal had been configured to align with the provisions of Nigeria’s new tax laws, automatically applying statutory allowances once taxpayers provide their income details.
Ango expressed confidence that the platform would improve revenue collection and help the Service exceed its annual revenue targets, while reiterating that voluntary compliance would remain its preferred approach to tax administration. He said enforcement and penalties would only be applied where taxpayers deliberately refuse to comply with their obligations, noting that the Service was prepared to grant extensions where genuine reasons for non-compliance exist.
The FCT-IRS chairman also stressed the importance of collaboration with government institutions, noting that the agency occupies a unique position as both a Federal Government agency and an agency of the Federal Capital Territory Administration. He said the engagement was designed to ensure a smooth transition from the previous tax platform to the upgraded system while strengthening partnerships with MDAs.
Ango noted that improved tax compliance would generate more revenue for infrastructure development and better public services in the FCT, adding that internally generated revenue remains critical because the territory receives only one per cent of the Federal Government’s allocation from the Federation Account.
The Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, Henry Nwauna, described the engagement as a strategic initiative that would strengthen collaboration between government institutions and tax authorities.
He said improved cooperation, transparency and accountability were essential to enhancing revenue generation and supporting sustainable national development.
Also speaking at the event, the Tax Controller of the MDA Tax Office, FCT-IRS, Fatima Abubakar, urged MDAs and taxpayers to comply with the provisions of the Nigerian Tax Reform Acts 2025 to avoid sanctions.
She said the sensitisation covered the Nigerian Tax Administration Act 2025 and other tax reform laws relating to taxpayer registration, filing of returns, tax assessments and the issuance of Tax Clearance Certificates.
Abubakar explained that all taxable individuals, businesses and government institutions are required to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number and comply with the obligations under the new legal framework, adding that the tax authority could automatically generate TINs using taxpayers’ National Identification Numbers.
She also urged MDAs to remit employers’ tax deductions promptly, noting that all taxable benefits and allowances received by employees are now subject to taxation under the new tax regime.
Abubakar further warned that agencies awarding contracts must request valid Tax Clearance Certificates from contractors or risk a ₦5m fine for non-compliance.
A representative of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Mohammed Ali, commended FCT-IRS for organising the engagement, describing it as a timely initiative that would strengthen collaboration, promote transparency and boost stakeholders’ confidence in the tax authority.
