Agribusiness firm creates job opportunities for 1,500 youths — official

Silvex International, a Kano-based agribusiness firm, has announced that it had created over 1, 500 direct jobs for youths in various agriculture value chains in five states, this year.

The Managing Director of the company, Mr Abubakar Usman-Karfi, made the disclosure at a presentation via a webinar, as part of activities marking the 2021 International Youth Day.

He noted that the country was facing challenges of dwindling revenue and unemployment, which had contributed to creating poverty among the citizens and the current insecurity challenges bedevilling the country.

According to him, the company created the job opportunities to complement government efforts at addressing unemployment.

Usman-Karfi identified production of foods, improved seeds and raw materials for industries, and environmental preservation, as the areas in which the firm created jobs.


“Apart from the direct jobs, we also facilitated creation of over 10,000 indirect jobs across the agriculture value chain through farm labour, especially for rural youth such as drivers, loaders, processing factory workers and buying agents.

“While in the direct jobs aspect, youths were engaged as crop producers, extension agents, processors, distributors and marketers, among others,” he said.

The Operating Officer of the company, Mr Abubakar Kunya, who confirmed this in a statement in Kano on Thursday, also quoted Usman-Karfi as citing the states where the jobs were created to include, Kano, Jigawa Katsina, Bauchi and Gombe.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the 2021 International Day of Youth is: “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”.
