The Governing Council of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, on Thursday said it has approved the appointment of Professor Ibrahim Garba as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman, Air Commodore Emmanuel Jekada (retd), told journalists shortly after the meeting of the council which held from Wednesday night to the early hours of Thursday at the Pro-Chancellor’s Lodge in Bauchi.
According to him, the process which produced Garba as the new Vice Chancellor, was not an easy one as many candidates were shortlisted, and interviewed and their names taken to the Department of State Services from scrutiny all in search for the best and most qualified.
“It is very pleasing to inform you that after a tedious work for many weeks and months, and after the expiration of the tenure of the other Vice Chancellor of the university, the council went through many procedures.
“In accordance with the provisions of the University’s Miscellaneous Law, Amendment Act 2003, the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Governing Council in the exercise of its powers under Section 6, subsection 4 of the Act, approved the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor for the University, and it is no any other person than Professor Ibrahim Hassan Garba.
“The exercise did not come as easy as we are now announcing it, it is something that we started since last February,” he said.
Jekada added that: “The normal thing was to make an advert to inform people of the vacancy existing in the university. After the applications were received, we had to start screening them by setting up committees. We did not stop at that, we set up a committee to go out and make a search for other people that may have not applied but we know will be very good, we were all searching for the best.
“We were able to get some and we screened them and we invited them for interview. We did not stop at that, to be sure of these appointment, all the list of the people that were shortlisted were sent to the DSS for screening to ensure we were dealing with the right people.
“After having the report and going through all the procedures, we were able to arrive at Prof. Ibrahim Garba. So, we hope that the new VC will be able to carry this university to greater heights.
“Our purpose as a council is to be sure that this university is to be sure that this university is counted as one of the best in this country, and we hope that God Almighty will help us achieve that.”
NATIONAL ACCORD reports that the new Vice Chancellor is a professor of Biochemistry and a former Deputy Vice Chancellor of ATBU.
