Barcelona have completed the signing of 18 year old Ecuadorian prospect Josué Caicedo from LDU Quito, bringing another South American youngster into a club that has made youth development a major part of its transfer strategy.
Caicedo joins Barça Atlètic on loan for the 2026/27 season, with a €2.5 million purchase option that becomes obligatory if he makes four official appearances for Barcelona’s first team. LDU Quito will also retain 20 per cent of any future sale.
The Ecuadorian arrives with limited senior experience but has already made the jump from youth football to the first team at LDU Quito, featuring in eight official matches and making an appearance in the Copa Libertadores. His performances at the Under 20 Copa Libertadores also helped put him on Barcelona’s radar.
Although Caicedo has largely been described as a left winger, Barcelona see him as a player capable of operating at left back or further forward. His pace, physical strength and attacking instinct give him the flexibility to play in different roles, something that could work in his favour as he adapts to Spanish football.
For now, the youngster’s immediate task is not to walk straight into Hansi Flick’s first team but to prove himself with Barça Atlètic under Juliano Belletti. That could turn out to be the most important part of the move because Barcelona have created a clear route for young players to earn their way into the senior squad rather than throwing them into the deep end.
The four appearance clause, however, adds an interesting layer to the deal. If Caicedo gets enough opportunities with the first team, Barcelona would be committed to making the €2.5 million move permanent. In other words, the club is taking a relatively small financial gamble now while leaving the door open for the teenager to make the decision much easier with his performances.
For Caicedo, the bigger opportunity is obvious. He is moving from Ecuadorian football into one of the most closely watched development systems in Europe at just 18. The challenge now is turning the excitement around his arrival into consistent performances, first with Barça Atlètic and eventually, if things go his way, at the highest level.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are betting once again that their scouting network can find tomorrow’s first team player before the rest of Europe gets there.
