Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo
Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has described President Bola Tinubu’s sweeping economic reforms as a “bitter but necessary medicine” for Nigeria’s long-troubled economy.
Speaking during Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration in Awka on Wednesday, Soludo acknowledged the hardship Nigerians are facing but urged citizens to brace up for the long haul.
> “These reforms will cause discomfort in the short term,” he said. “But they are a necessary medicine for an economy that has been distorted for decades and merely papered over.”
The governor threw his weight behind key policy shifts initiated by the Tinubu administration, including fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate unification, and overhauls in fiscal and tax systems. While conceding that the changes are tough, Soludo argued they are vital for building a more stable and inclusive economy.
> “We’re at a turning point,” he said. “Now is the time to rebuild our nation on a stronger foundation. The road to renewal is never easy—it requires sacrifice, discipline, and above all, belief in a better tomorrow.”
Calling on Nigerians to remain patriotic and law-abiding, Soludo emphasized the importance of civic responsibility, especially in areas like tax compliance.
> “If we want a country where the currency is stronger, where the economy works for everyone—not just the privileged few—then we must all play our part.”
The former Central Bank governor also reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence, describing it as a blend of “triumphs and trials, setbacks and reconciliations,” but said the spirit of the Nigerian people continues to shine through.
> “Our independence remains a powerful symbol—not just for us, but for the entire Black race—of hope, freedom, and possibility,” he noted.
Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in human capital, particularly the youth, to equip them with the tools to innovate and succeed in a changing world.
The Independence Day celebration in Awka featured a colorful parade led by SP Paul Igwenma, with participation from the Nigerian Police, traffic agencies, civil groups, school children, and community organizations.
