The Acting Governor of Borno State, His Excellency, (Dr) Umar Usman Kadafur has approved that Monday 8 July 2024 shall be a Public Holiday in Borno State to commemorate the New Islamic Year.
The Hijri New Year is the Islamic Lunar Calendar that begins on the first day of the month of Muharram, which is expected to start on either Saturday, July 6 or Sunday, July 7 2024, depending on moon sighting.
The first day of Muharram marks the Hijra, migration of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 AD. It is also one of the four sacred months of the Islamic Year as mentioned in the Quran by Allah (SWT).
Kadafur in a statement wished Muslims in Borno State, Nigeria and across the world, a peaceful, harmonious and productive New Islamic Year.
He also enjoined the Muslim community to remain committed to the virtues of moderation, piety, tolerance, respect, dignity and patriotism, which are also universal values.
Kadafur further admonished Muslims to live peacefully with other faithful communities, while building ties of fraternity, generosity and mercy that bind the human family together.
