The Centre for the Study and Promotion of Cultural Sustainability (CSPCS), has held its International Conference on “Conflicts, Indigenous Institutions and Cultural Sustainability” at the Mohammed Indimi Centre for Distance Learning, University of Maiduguri on Wednesday.
The CSPCS conference was aimed at leveraging on indigenous sociocultural and political institutions for finding innovative ways of finding enduring solutions for sustaining cultural heritage for peace and development.
The CSPCS, called on the SDG Graduate School which is run by the University of Maiduguri in partnership with the University of Hildesheim, Germany and University of Cape Coast, Ghana to focus on “Performing Sustainability, Cultures and Development.”
The three universities are collaborating with the support of DAAD with funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The Board of Directors of the. SDG Graduate Schools were drawn from Hildesheim, Maiduguri and Cape Coast. The Board is Chaired by Professor (Dr) Raimund Vogel. Each School has a steering committee while the Director of the CSPCS, Unimaid is Professor Saliba B. James, a distinguished Professor of History.
The keynote lecture was presented by Professor Andrew Haruna of Department of Languages and Linguistics, Unimaid and immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Gashua (FUGA).
Two lead papers were presented by Professor Usman Tar of the Department of Political Science and Defence Studies, Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Kaduna, and Professor Jonathan Owens of the University of Hildesheim, Germany.
It is expected that 88 papers are to be presented on different areas of cultural sustainability tied to the SDGs. Technical sessions will commence after the opening ceremony.
