Green tea is a natural source of caffeine which makes a great way to perking yourself up when you are feeling tired.

The good news is that green tea contains less caffeine than coffee meaning that one can sip this beverage through out the afternoon without significantly disturbing one’s sleep or suffering through the jitter side effects of a caffeine overdose.

Green tea consumers have risen to popularity and second to coffee or tea. Just like both beverages, green tea is consumed either hot or cold.

People consume green tea for its rich polyphenol and antioxidants content. They know that the optimum brewing or drinking temperature is essential to reap it maximum benefits.

Traditionally, green tea is brewed using hot (hot boiling water) but recent evidence revealed that brewing and consuming green tea in a cooler temperature is better.

Research has found that using water lower than 90-degree Celsius is more effective in extracting the polyphenol from green tea. In fact, the lower the temperature the better. Colder temperature is also effective in removing the bitterness that is sometimes present in green tea.

tea brewed and drunk in cold temperatures has a higher bioactive concentration, especially of gallic acid and epigallocatechin. The benefits of drinking green tea with high amount of these bioactive amount include, reduction in inflammation, improvement in bone strength by preventing the reabsorption of bone cells and limiting the growth of bacteria in the mouth. In addition, drinking cold green tea is beneficial for reducing the risk of oesophageal cancer as studies have found drinking green tea at temperature higher than 60-degree celsius increases ESOP cancer risk by 90 percent.

 

How to Brew the Best Cold Green Tea

 

To effectively brew a cup of cold green tea, take a cup of warm water or room temperature water, then add a bag of green tea or a table spoon of powder green tea leaves.

Allow it to steep for 30 minutes or an hour, remove the leaves’ bag and let it drip. Please do not squeeze it. Then add honey if desired and consume your drink.
