Community Health Practitioners propose degree programme for members at ATBU, Bauchi

ARMSTRONG ALLAHMAGANI, Bauchi

Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria is proposing to float degree courses for its members at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

This was disclosed by the Director, Public Relations of the University, Dr Andee Iheme, in a statement made available to NATIONAL ACCORD in Bauchi on Saturday.

He said the Board disclosed the proposal when its two-man delegation from Abuja visited the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammadu Abdulazeez, on Friday in Bauchi.

According to him, Prof. Muhammadu Abdulazeez who thanked them for their choice of ATBU for their programme, described it as an honour and assured them that his university has the necessary facilities and intellectual capacity to run courses in community health and other related areas at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

Dr Iheme said: “He stressed the importance of the programme and emphasised that the approval of the National Universities Commission was required to mount it and that all student intakes must go through JAMB. 

“Prof. Abdulazeez then advised the Board to put their request in writing to facilitate the process.”

He said that the leader of the delegation,  Alh. Saleh Isa and his colleague, had earlier speaking, stated their mission and informed the VC that they had prepared a draft curriculum of the proposed course.

“They also noted the importance of community health which they described as grassroots healthcare delivery that caters for about 70 percent of rural Nigerians.

“Against this backdrop, they made a strong case for the training and retraining of their membership of over 214,633 practitioners in order to enhance their service delivery to Nigerians.

“With her already existing programmes in related areas, they argued that ATBU would not have much problem running degree courses for community health practitioners,” he said.

The Public Relations Director, informed that Alh. Isa also presented copies of the draft curriculum and other documents to the VC and thanked him for granting them audience.

Those present at the brief occasion, according to Iheme, were Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof M. A Danjuma; Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof I.H Garba; Bursar, Alh. Sani Ahmed, Director Academic Planning, Prof. Likkason; Director, Public Relations, Dr. A Iheme and the former University Librarian, Dr. A. Bello.
