As preparations ramp up for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s national convention, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, has said that Nigerians are keenly watching, hoping to see the PDP reorganize and reclaim its position as a stabilizing force in the nation’s democracy.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Ologunagba, who also serves as Secretary of the Convention Publicity Sub-Committee, noted that the level of public interest in the upcoming convention reflects Nigerians’ deep trust in the PDP’s ability to steer the country in the right direction.
> “Nigerians are eager to know what the PDP is doing to put itself together as a party,” he said. “They see the party’s vibrancy as the only way to guarantee the sustenance of democracy in the country.”
The national convention is scheduled for November 15 and 16 and, according to Ologunagba, has drawn widespread attention both within and outside party lines.
> “This convention is not just about the PDP—it’s about the future of democracy in Nigeria,” he added. “The enthusiasm we’re seeing is a testament to the belief that only a united and re-energized PDP can restore the nation’s hope.”
Reflecting on the party’s past, Ologunagba highlighted the achievements during its 16 years in power, which he described as a period of growth and stability.
> “Under PDP, our national debt was cleared, GDP growth hit double digits, and inflation was kept in check. We prioritized education, health, and human capital development. By 2015, Nigeria had become Africa’s largest economy with over $600 billion in GDP and was the top destination for foreign investments,” he stated.
On the convention planning process, Ologunagba revealed that members are actively involved across 15 broad-based sub-committees to ensure inclusivity and success.
Responding to rumors that a serving PDP governor may soon defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ologunagba dismissed the speculation as inconsequential to the party’s agenda.
> “The PDP is bigger than any individual. Our convention and our mission to rebuild Nigeria are not dependent on personal ambitions,” he said.
Regarding the situation in Edo State, he confirmed that the party had successfully conducted its congress on September 27 through a duly constituted committee.
> “There was an appeal panel set up in line with our constitution to address any concerns. If there were any parallel activities, they were nothing more than political drama aimed at pleasing certain paymasters,” he added.
As the PDP sets its sights on a new chapter, Ologunagba said the upcoming convention represents not just internal reorganization, but a significant step toward rebuilding trust with Nigerians and strengthening democratic institutions.
