As preparations for the 2025 National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gather momentum, the party’s Security and Intelligence Subcommittee has urged members to unite in ensuring a peaceful and orderly convention.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the subcommittee held Wednesday in Abuja, Vice Chairman and former PDP National Organising Secretary, Retired Colonel Austin Akobundu, emphasized the critical role of security in the success of the convention.
> “For me, it’s familiar terrain. My team and I pledge to give our best based on experience and commitment to the party,” Akobundu said.
He acknowledged the scale of the task ahead but expressed confidence in the team’s ability, noting that collaboration with various security agencies would be key to delivering a smooth event.
> “Our job is to ensure the convention is transparent, well-organised, and smooth, providing a conducive environment for delegates and leaders alike,” he added.
“We approach this task seriously and seek the cooperation of every party member to ensure success.”
Akobundu noted that the subcommittee is composed of seasoned professionals, including retired military officers, members of the Department of State Services (DSS), police personnel, and other security experts providing logistical and administrative support.
Also speaking at the meeting, Deputy Chairman of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), Tanimu Turaki, called on the subcommittee to raise the bar for political events in Nigeria.
> “You were selected for your unique contributions to ensure the best convention any party has held,” Turaki said.
“Eighty-five percent of the convention’s success hinges on security arrangements—and you have our full support.”
He urged the team to work diligently, stating that a peaceful convention would not only benefit the PDP but also serve as a model for democratic processes across the country.
