COVID-19 infections in Nigeria rise to 39539

Nigeria has recorded 591 new cases of COVID-19, bringing total infections to 39,539 as of July 24.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), which  made this known on its official twitter handle on Friday, stated that “regrettably”, 12 deaths were recorded in the country.

This came as Oyo State reported its highest one-day total of new COVID-19  cases since the start of the pandemic, with 191 new infections.

The data released Friday night by the NCDC revealed that the state also toppled Lagos State from the number one spot in daily new infections.

According to the data, the latest COVID-19 infections were reported in 16 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“While Lagos came second on the list with 168 cases, the FCT recorded 61 cases,” it added.

The health agency further said that states with new infections are Ondo. 29, Osun, 26, Ebonyi, 24, Edo, 23, Ogun, 14, Rivers, 13, Akwa Ibom, 12, and Kaduna, 10.

Others are Katsina, 6, Borno, 4, Ekiti, Delta and Imo each having 3 cases, and Niger, 1.

NCDC said that till date, 39,539 cases had been confirmed, while 16,559 casesdcases had been discharged, and 845 deaths had been recorded in 36 states and FCT.

It explained that a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC) activated at Level 3, had continued to coordinate national response activities in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lagos State, which recorded 168 new cases, had repeatedly held the first position in daily new COVID-19 infections since the index case was first reported in the country.

The 191 new coronavirus infections in Oyo State eclipsed its previous daily high of 141 new infections.

According to the NCDC tally, the new figures raised the number of confirmed cases in the state to 2,497 from 2,309.

The state continued to hold the third spot for total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country with Lagos and FCT leading in the first and second positions respectively.
