Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commended Team Nigeria for an impressive outing at the ongoing African Wrestling Championship, where the country secured four gold medals in the women’s category on the opening day of the tournament.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, who also serves as President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, praised the athletes for their discipline, resilience, and unwavering commitment to national pride, noting that their performance reflects the spirit of excellence associated with Nigeria.
Reigning African champion Esther Kolawole led the medal haul with a commanding 10–0 victory over South Africa’s Katelyn Swan in the 62kg category, securing her fifth continental title.
Earlier, Ogunsanya Christianah set the pace for Team Nigeria, clinching the country’s first gold medal with a 7–1 victory over the Ivory Coast’s Nogona Bakayoko in the 53kg category.
Jumoke Adekoye sustained the winning momentum with an impressive 8–4 triumph over Algeria’s Achouak Tekouk in the 57kg category, while Hannah Ojo delivered a composed performance to defeat Cameroon’s Pelagie Wilita 3–1 in the 73kg division.
Hannah Reuben further added to the nation’s success, securing a silver medal after a strong showing against Benin’s Kawiyatou Issifou.
Reacting to the achievement, the CGC expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, describing the moment as a proud one for Nigeria, as the national anthem was played repeatedly in recognition of the athletes’ success.
“It is a proud moment for Nigeria to witness such exceptional performances. These athletes have demonstrated the values of hard work, discipline, and patriotism,” Adeniyi stated.
