Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed concern over what he described as the growing involvement of some residents in facilitating kidnapping and other criminal activities across the state.
The governor made the remarks during the 2026 Ministers’ Conference organised by the Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Benin City.
According to Okpebholo, investigations and security reports indicate that certain individuals within the state are collaborating with criminal elements from outside Edo, providing support that enables them to carry out abductions and other unlawful acts.
He alleged that some local accomplices recruit criminals from neighbouring areas, assist in coordinating kidnap-for-ransom operations, and hand over victims to armed gangs hiding in forest locations.
The governor lamented what he described as the disturbing trend of residents joining forces with outsiders to commit crimes against fellow citizens, noting that such actions undermine efforts to maintain peace and security in the state.
Okpebholo, however, assured residents that his administration remains committed to tackling insecurity and would continue to intensify efforts aimed at flushing out criminal elements from all parts of Edo.
He also cautioned religious leaders against intervening on behalf of suspects arrested for criminal offences, stressing that anyone found guilty would be allowed to face the consequences of their actions without political or religious influence.
Speaking at the conference, renowned cleric Bishop David Abioye urged ministers of the Gospel to uphold holiness, integrity and moral discipline in their personal and public lives. He emphasised the importance of avoiding adultery and other forms of conduct capable of undermining the credibility of Christian leadership.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to public safety, Governor Okpebholo said security agencies have remained vigilant and are working around the clock to prevent criminal groups from establishing a foothold anywhere in Edo State.
He assured residents that ongoing security measures would be strengthened to ensure the protection of lives and property across the state.
