Customs seizes 319 bales of second hand clothing, others in Katsina l

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller-General of Customs (CGS) Strike Force Team, Zone B, has seized 319 bales of second hand clothing and other items smuggled through Katsina State borders.

The team Coordinator, Deputy Controller Olorukoba Oseini-Aliyu made the disclosure on Tuesday in Katsina, while displaying seized items to newsmen.

Oseini-Aliyu said that the items seized during the last 40 days between Oct. 11 and Nov. 20 had Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N67million.

He said that the items included 396 bags of foreign rice, nine vehicles, 57 cartons of milk and sweets as well as 17 cartons of foreign spaghetti.

The coordinator called on Nigerians to stop patronising second hand clothing to safeguard their health.

“As the year is coming to an end, some smugglers want to take that advantage to smuggle prohibited items into the country.

“My advice to smugglers is simple; they should change their mind for the better and to start legitimate trade.

“CGC has equipped and motivated us to do everything possible within the law to stop smuggling into the country.

“That remains our focus, we will continue to create conducive environment for people to do their legitimate trading.”

Oseini-Aliyu also urged the public to continue to support the service in its efforts to fight the menace.

He called on the media to continue to enlighten the public, particularly border communities on the dangers associated with smuggling. (NAN)
