Democracy Day: Borno to establish irrigation sprinklers, distributes tractors, fertilizers to boost agriculture

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has pledged to establish mega sprinkler Irrigation projects in 6 LGAs of the state in order to boost agricultural production and development of the state.

Governor Zulum made the pledge on Monday in Maidugiri while inspecting completed capital projects but yet to be commissioned that were executed during his first tenure in office to mark June 12 Democracy Day.

He also added that his government will ensure large quantity of fertilizers are produced and distribute to the rural and urban farmers for bumper harvest this year farming season.

The governor while inspecting State Farm House and Borno Fertiliser Company Limited, said, “We are going to establish mega sprinkler irrigation projects in six local government areas of the state this year. We have already established two such projects,”

He explained further that the state’s proximity to Lake Chad is a significant advantage for the establishment of irrigation projects and revitalising agricultural activities and the state is rich in groundwater due to its proximity to the lake,.

“Groundwater is never a limiting factor for irrigation projects at the shores of Lake Chad. Water has reached five metres below the ground at the shores of Lake Chad, while in other parts of the state, shallow wells also supply sufficient water”, Zulum added.

According to him, he went around the Maiduguri metropolis on an inspection tour of completed as dividends of democracy that the state should celebrate.

The governor also hinted on his administration’s plan to resuscitate, through Public-Private-Partnership of the fertiliser blending factory that closed due to the Boko Haram insurgency.

“We are also going to flag off, on Tuesday, June 13, the distribution of 1,000 tractors for this year’s farming season, out of which each of the 27 local government areas of the state is to be allocated five,,” Zulum said.
