EU seeks passage of electoral act in Nigeria

Head of the European Union delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS Ambassador Ketil Karlsen

The European Union has expressed concern over pending issues surrounding the non passage of the electoral act into law.

The head of the European Union delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS Ambassador Ketil Karlsen stated this in Abuja during a press briefing ahead of this year’s Europe day.

Ambassador Karlsen who expressed concern that Nigeria was not on track with regards to electoral reforms, explained that being a leader in Africa, the country was ranking low on women participation in governance.

He said when passed into law, the electoral law would address some of the limitations existing in the current law.

The EU Ambassador urged INEC and all stakeholders to ensure the electoral act was passed before 2023 election.

He said the President’s refusal to assent to the electoral act at the peak of the 2019 general elections due to the proximity with date of the elections could be avoided if all hands are put on deck.

On human rights and freedom, Ambassador Karlsen announced that Nigeria is one of the pilot countries for the EU-UN Global spotlight Initiative, a multi-year joint effort to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls 2030.

He said an initial investment of twenty five million Euros was made to Nigeria in that regard.
