Anthony Joshua and his driver
A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of two key members of boxing star Anthony Joshua’s camp, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode, 46, is standing trial over a fatal crash that killed Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, following a collision along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway late last year.
The defendant was first arraigned on January 2 before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, who is presiding over the case at the Sagamu Magistrate’s Court.
He faces a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as applicable in Ogun State), as well as reckless and negligent driving under Section 6(1) of the same Act.
The other charges include driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1) of the Act, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.
When the matter came up for hearing, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, sought an adjournment to enable the prosecution “duplicate the case file to the office of the Attorney General of the state through the office of the Department of Public Prosecution for advice and in the interest of justice.”
The application was initially opposed by defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, who told the court he was ready to proceed with the trial without delay. However, in her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the case to February 25 for further hearing.
The court also admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, pending the continuation of proceedings.
The tragic incident occurred on December 29, 2025, when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. While Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries and were later discharged after being declared clinically fit, Ayodele and Ghami lost their lives in the crash.
Their deaths sent shockwaves through the international boxing community, with Joshua later visiting the funeral home in Lagos alongside his mother before travelling to the United Kingdom for the burial rites. Funeral prayers were held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque, as tributes poured in for Ghami and Ayodele, widely regarded as central figures in the former world heavyweight champion’s camp.
