Group launches skills acquisition training for 50 vulnerable women, girls in Borno

The Executive Director of Initiative for Educational Awareness and Economic Development (INEAED) Maiduguri, Ambassador Bulama Abiso, has said that the organization decided to launch an educational,, awareness and skills acquisition programme for 50 selected vulnerable women and girls across the 27 LGAs of the state.

Amb. Abiso said the launching of the program is part of organisation ‘s social and humanitarian intervention for victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.

He stated this on Thursday in Maiduguri at the launching of the programme tagged, “Building Resilience and Economic Recovery for women and Girls in Borno State.

He said: “Today’s program is solely funded by the organisation where about 50 women and girls in Borno state will be trained in various skills to build their resilience and empower them economically.”

“Our organisation is founded in 2016 with the aim of creating awareness on the importance of education and also building economic empowerment,” Abiso said.

The Project Manager, INEAED, Mrs. Zara Abubakar gave an overview of the project and its significance as well as impact it will make on the beneficiaries while the goal of the project is to build economic and social resilience of vulnerable women and girls in the post conflict era.

According to her, those lacking resilience get easily overwhelmed and may turn out to be unhealthy coping mechanisms., noting that, resilient people tap into their strengths and support systems to overcome challenges and work through problems.

Zara added that the project will lead to 60% increase in livelihood support to the family of the beneficiaries and would also reduce rate of violence against women and girls.

She explained further that the objectives of the project is to increase the resilience of the vulnerable women and girls through removal of barriers by way of creating an enabling and decent working and business environment for the beneficiaries and to support the vulnerable women and girls to enable be self reliant.

The Project Manager said also that the project was to reduce stress caused by the effects of the insurgency and conflict across the state where 50 vulnerable women and girls who were selected out of the 491 applicants that applied through online application across Borno State.

She added that the training program is divided into two categories of – physical skills acquisition and the training on digital skills training. Where the physical skills acquisition is divided into 5 modules of special bed sheet making, local incense (Turaren Wuta) making, baby bed making, and baby water making.

While the digital skills training is in 3 modules of social media marketing, digital marketing and Training on VSLA (Village Saving and Loan Association) with time line where the beneficiaries are expected to undergo rigorous physical skills acquisition training for two weeks and another two weeks for the digital skills training.

Mrs. Abubakar said at the end of the training program, it is expected that the beneficiaries should be able to adopt and understand one or two of the physical skills they had acquired as source of livelihood and should be able to market their products through digital marketing.

Highlights of the event include display of samples of household products, cosmetics and deodorant, incense products and photographs among others.
