How police officer killed two vigilantes with knife in Bauchi

Hundreds of youths in Yelwa area, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, took to the street to protest the alleged stabbing of three residents by a police officer, which led to their death.

The irate youth, who blocked the Dass Road from Elim Church junction to the Yelwa Divisional Headquarters, burnt tyres and used drums and water tanks to block the road forcing road users to divert into Yelwa Kagadama in order to avoid the obstruction.

The protesters hurled stones and objects at the Police at the scene and inside the Yelwa police station, demanding for the release of the killer cop to them.

The police operatives in a bid to resist the mob who were trying to force their way into the station, shot canisters of teargas into the crowd to disperse them. They however retreated and regrouped.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State police spokesman, SP Ahmed Wakil, who has confirmed the incident in a statement, said the suspect had an encounter with a patrol team comprising of the men of the police force from the Yelwa Division and members of a Vigilante and Peace Committee where he stabbed three of the vigilantes.

He added that they were rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where two of them were confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

Wakil, said: “On 24th March, 2022 at about 2230hrs, a patrol team attached to E’ Division while on visibility patrol around a black spot at Rafin zurfi, Yelwa arrested F/no. 519342 PC Lukman Madaki, (29), of Toro Division attached to Sports Office, Bauchi State Police Command Headquarters.

“In a bid to resist arrest, PC Lukman employed the use of jack knife, stabbed and injured the following members of the Peace and Security committee attached to the patrol team: Abdulmalik Mohammed (22) of Sabon Gida Yelwa, Sadiq (23) of Sabon Gida Yelwa and Nazifi Mohammed (19) of Yelwan labourer.

“The victims were rushed to ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi for treatment where Abdulmalik Mohammed and Sadiq were certified dead by a medical doctor, while Nazifi Mohammed the third victim is currently responding to treatment.

“The suspect has since been arrested and detained while investigation has commenced in earnest”.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has commiserated with the families of the deceased, and the people of Bauchi state over the unfortunate incident.

He ordered a full scale investigations into the matter and appeals for calm while urging members of the public not to take laws into their hands as the outcome of the investigation will be made public.

Wakil said that the Commissioner of Police also enjoined citizens of the state to remain law abiding and to continue to assist the command to fight crime in the state by promptly reporting any incident.

“Finally the CP once more, assures the public of his commitment in the fight against criminality in accordance to the law in the State,” he said.
