Papa Ajasco
Veteran actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known for his role as Papa Ajasco, has opened up about the personal struggles he faces despite decades of fame in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Ayoyinka, who plays the iconic character in the long-running sitcom Papa Ajasco & Company, shared his experience during a recent interview with content creator Lucky Udu, a clip of which has been widely circulated on Instagram.
Speaking candidly about life beyond the camera, the actor revealed that the popularity associated with his role has not translated into the financial comfort many people assume.
“I don’t have a car of my own. I don’t have a house of my own,” he said.
The veteran entertainer explained that while the show has made him a household name, the earnings from the production are modest. According to him, he reportedly receives between ₦45,000 and ₦60,000 for each episode he appears in.
Ayoyinka also noted that the character he portrays is owned by renowned producer Wale Adenuga, which limits his ability to use the Papa Ajasco persona for advertisements or other commercial engagements outside the programme.
The revelation sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many fans expressing surprise and sympathy for the actor whose comedic performances have entertained Nigerian audiences for years.
Several commenters also used the moment to highlight the broader issue of how veteran actors in the Nigerian film and television industry are often under-rewarded despite their significant contributions.
The sitcom Papa Ajasco & Company, which first aired in 1996, remains one of the longest-running television comedy series in Nigeria and has played a major role in shaping local TV comedy.
Ayoyinka’s story, however, offers a reminder that fame does not always guarantee financial stability, and that behind the laughter many entertainers still face everyday realities and personal challenges.
